Administrative Changes for 2018-19


Following last night's Consolidated High School District 230 School Board meeting, a transition plan for administrators in light of the promotion of Jen Tyrrell from Stagg High School Associate Principal to Sandburg High School Principal next school year that was approved last month. Dr. Katie McMillan will transition from Andrew to Stagg High School as Associate Principal for Instruction. Abir Othman will become Associate Principal for Instruction at Andrew. And, Brian Nolan will become Associate Principal for Student Services at Andrew.

"One of the most important responsibilities I have as Superintendent is to assure the leadership teams in our schools are strong and prepared to lead," said Superintendent Dr. James Gay. "The hiring of Jen Tyrrell as Principal at Sandburg High School has provided a great opportunity for me to talk with our principals about opportunities to strengthen those teams even more. Through those conversations, we all agree that there is great talent within the administrative teams at each of our schools. We have assessed the strengths of our teams and of our individuals and believe that the following transition plan will further enhance the leadership at Sandburg, Stagg and Andrew High Schools."  

As Tyrrell moves from Stagg to Sandburg High School, McMillan will move from Andrew to Stagg High School in the same role of Associate Principal for Instruction. McMillan has been a member of the Andrew High School staff since 1998 when she was hired as a science teacher. In 2006, she joined the administrative team.

"Katie's more than 10 years of experience in this role will provide depth of knowledge and expertise that is needed as Jen moves to her new role," Gay said. "Katie is a great complement to the leadership of Principal Eric Olsen and Associate Principal Ian MacLeod and will round out the Stagg main office team."

"Dr. McMillan has been a vital member our team," said Andrew High School Principal Bob Nolting. "Under her leadership, we have reached remarkable heights in academic achievement. She has been instrumental in building award-winning academic resource centers for student success.  Also, she was an essential component to building our Advanced Placement program to national recognition. She will be sorely missed, but we wish her nothing but the best on her future in District 230."

"The leadership that Dr. McMillan has provided to Andrew High School and for District 230 will be a valued asset to Stagg High School," said Stagg Principal Eric Olsen. "Katie's varied experience, knowledge and expertise will surely bring added value to the programs provided to Stagg students."

Othman will transition from Associate Principal for Student Services to Associate Principal for Instruction at Andrew. Othman joined District 230 as a Dean of Students at Andrew in 2003. She became Head Dean at Stagg in 2007 and returned to Andrew in 2010 in the capacity of Assistant Principal and then as Associate Principal. Before working for District 230, she served as an English teacher and administrator at Universal School in Bridgeview.

"In every role Abir has played, she has proven to be a successful leader," said Gay. "Her strong academic background and leadership abilities will serve the Andrew community well in her new role."

"After a long history of PPS experience, we look forward to having Mrs. Othman transition to Instructional Services," said Nolting. "Her passion for education, students and learning will be an asset moving forward.  Abir has a long record of bringing individuals together to make meaningful change to Andrew High School - I look forward to working with her in a unique way."

Nolan will transition from Guidance Director to Associate Principal for Student Services at Andrew High School. Nolan joined Andrew as Guidance Director in 2009. Prior to Andrew, he served as Student Activities Director at Niles North High School in Skokie, and then Lyons Township High School in LaGrange. He coached soccer at his first school, St. Rita, and has coordinated numerous clubs and activities.

"Brian's extensive background in athletics, activities and PPS, coupled with his strong working relationship with the Guidance and Deans Offices will be a great asset in his new role," said Gay.

"Mr. Nolan has done a remarkable job in making changes to our guidance office to help students plan for a meaningful future," said Nolting. "He has a wealth of talents that will help him work with our entire Pupil Personnel Services team as they continue to build programs and supports for students. Additionally, his background and passion for student activities will help continue to grow our programs with regards to both participation and success."

These new administrative assignments will be effective on July 1, 2018. The district and school administrative teams are committed to assisting each of these administrators as they transition to their new roles.
